What is CBD oil?

Before we discuss the benefits as well as the drawbacks of CBD for dogs with arthritis pain, it’s important to understand what CBD oil is and how it works to help your dog with arthritis pain.

CBD oil is extracted from the Hemp plant, which contains low amounts of cannabidiol, the active ingredient compared to marijuana.

Hemp is a variety of Cannabis sativa that contains low levels of THC, the psychoactive compound found in marijuana.

The extraction process involves several steps to ensure the CBD oil is safe and effective for dogs.

  1. Hemp cultivation
    • Hemp plants are grown specifically for CBD extraction. They are cultivated under strict regulations to ensure they contain low levels of THC and high levels of CBD.
  2. Harvesting
    • Once the hemp plants have matured, they are harvested. The flowers, leaves, and stalks of the plant contain the highest concentrations of CBD.
  3. Extraction
    • CO2 extraction.
      • This method uses pressurized carbon dioxide to extract CBD from the plant material. CO2 is passed through the hemp at specific temperatures and pressures, resulting in a concentrated CBD extract.
    • Solvent extraction
      • This method involves the use of solvents like ethanol or butane to separate CBD from the plant material. The solvent dissolves the CBD, and then it is evaporated to leave behind the CBD extract.
  4. Filtration
    • After extraction, the CBD extract goes through a filtration process to remove any plant material or impurities. This step ensures the purity of the CBD oil.
  5. Decarboxylation
    • The extracted CBD is often in its acidic form, known as cannabidiolic acid (CBDA). To activate the CBD and increase its potency, the extract undergoes a process called decarboxylation. It involves heating the extract to convert CBDA into CBD.
  6. Dilution
    • CBD extract is highly concentrated, so it needs to be diluted with a carrier oil to create CBD oil.
    • Common carrier oils used include
      • Hemp Seed Oil
      • Coconut Oil
      • Olive Oil
    • The dilution allows for accurate dosing and makes it easier to administer to dogs.

CBD for Dogs With Arthritis Pain – CBD Content

Most commercially available CBD oils used in dogs contain 0.3% THC (CBD content).

This is a legal requirement in many jurisdictions, including the United States.

The limit is based on the definition of hemp, which classifies cannabis plants with THC levels below 0.3% as hemp.

CBD oil derived from hemp is legal in many places, while CBD oil derived from marijuana plants with higher THC levels may be subject to stricter regulations.

The 0.3% limit ensures that CBD oil for dogs contains only trace amounts of THC, not enough to cause intoxication or psychoactive effects.

It allows for the therapeutic benefits of CBD to be utilized without any significant risks associated with THC consumption.

This low THC content also aligns with the safety guidelines for pets, as THC can be toxic to dogs in higher doses.

It’s important to note that the CBD content may vary between different CBD oil products for dogs.

Some oils may have higher CBD concentrations, but they should still comply with local regulations regarding THC limits to ensure their safety and legality.

We use and recommend CBD oil from PAWs CBD. Their products are all lab tested to make sure they contain the lowest amounts of THC. They are made from growing non-GMO hemp grown in the United States.

Now that we have a good understanding of what CBD oil is, how it is and the regulatory guidelines required for CBD for dogs, let’s look at the benefits it can provide your Boxer based on the science. We will also be discussing the cons as well because CBD may not be suitable for all dog with arthritis.

    • Dogs experiencing muscle stiffness or tension may find it challenging to get comfortable and fall asleep.
    • By relaxing muscles, CBD oil may facilitate a more relaxed state conducive to sleep.
  5. Anti-inflammatory Effects
    • Inflammation can cause discomfort and pain, making it difficult for dogs to find a comfortable sleep position.
    • CBD oil’s anti-inflammatory properties may help reduce inflammation in the body, including in the joints and muscles.
    • By addressing underlying inflammation, CBD oil may indirectly improve sleep quality in dogs.

It’s important to note that while there is anecdotal evidence and some preliminary research supporting the potential benefits of CBD oil for sleep improvement in dogs, more scientific studies are needed to establish its efficacy and optimal dosages.

Every dog is unique, and individual responses to CBD oil may vary.

Consulting with a veterinarian experienced in cannabis products for pets is crucial to determine the appropriate dosage and to ensure the product’s quality and safety.

Additionally, it’s important to create a conducive sleep environment for your dog, including a comfortable bed, a quiet and dark space, and a consistent bedtime routine.

Addressing any underlying health conditions, providing regular exercise, and maintaining a balanced diet are also essential for promoting healthy sleep patterns in dogs.

CBD For Dogs with Arthritis – Personal Success Story

CBD for dogs with Arthritis - Photo fo our Senior Boxer Dog

We wanted to share our personal success story on using CBD for dogs with arthritis through our Boxer Duke’s journey.

We have a passion for adopting Boxer dogs from Adopt a Boxer Rescue because we believe in supporting their mission of finding loving forever homes for Boxers who may have come from horrendous living conditions.

Our Boxer Duke is no exception. We adopted Duke almost 10 years ago after he had fallen through a trampoline as a puppy and required 50 staples to close the wound.

Duke has been a great addition to the family. He’s smart and loves to play and is always excited when we come home.

For the first time, Duke is the older brother after having 2 older adopted Boxers sisters (Chloe and Hazel).

As Duke began to enter his senior years he developed osteoarthritis in his front shoulder which started to have a significant impact on his mobility, ability to play, and sleep.

His veterinarian prescribed a prescription analgesic which has some positive effects. However, Duke continues to limp because of the pain in his front shoulder.

We did some research and found that some studies showed positive effects on pain management using CBD for dogs with arthritis.

We asked Duke’s veterinarian and he said that he has been using CBD oil with his two senior dogs with arthritis with good success.

He said based on Duke’s medical history and after an examination that it would be appropriate to try CBD oil with Duke to see if he saw any improvement.

He recommended 50 mg of CBD oil twice a day after titrating up to this dose to ensure there were no side effects. We ordered the CBD oil from PAW CBD after doing research on product quality.

After titrating up to the recommended dose of 50 mg of CBD oil two times per day, we soon noticed a significant improvement in Duke’s mobility. His limp was dramatically diminished and on most days was barely noticeable or non-existent.

Duke was able to resume playing with his sister Katie in the backyard and did not have a horrible limp when finished playing.

His sleep had dramatically improved. Pre CBD oil he would often wake up several times during the night. After reaching the therapeutic level he has been sleeping comfortably through the night.

We have been so impressed with the results CBD for dogs with arthritis has provided that we wanted to write this blog to share our personal story.

While CBD for dogs with arthritis may not be appropriate for all dogs, it may be worth investigating with your veterinarian if your dog is having breakthrough pain on a prescription analgesic.

We use and recommend CBD oil from PAW CBD. They have quality products that are tested to ensure purity.
